The first of this year’s Champions League semi-finals sees Liverpool take on Italian side Roma in the Anfield club’s first appearance in the last four of the competition since 2008.

Liverpool, the Champions League winners in 2005, have not faced As Roma in a competitive match since March 2002 whereas Roma are fourth in Serie A – 21 points behind leaders Juventus.
Liverpool’s last of five meetings with As Roma came in 2002, when a 2-0 win put them into the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Roma sporting director Monchi believes the tie also offers the Italians hope of progress.
“It feels like a great opportunity to chase the joy we were not able to experience so many years ago, but of course it will be difficult because Liverpool are an extremely strong side,” he said on the club’s official Twitter page.
“We need to think about ourselves and try to reproduce what we were able to show against Barcelona.”
Roma travels to England on Tuesday to face Liverpool in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal matchup.
